Praia da Nazaré is a relatively recent human settlement. The first references to fishing in Nazaré date back to 1643, but it was only at the beginning of the 1980s that people began to settle on the beach.

The area currently occupied by the houses was, at the time, occupied by coastal dunes that would be cut out, upstream, by the mouth of the Alcoa River, which would flow far to the north of the current one (south of the Fishing Port), and the various changes to the riverbed contributed to the diversification of the local geology.

The local fishermen lived mainly in the higher parts - Sítio and Pederneira - since the constant attacks by Algerian and Dutch pirates made the sand unsafe.

It wasn't until the 19th century, after the French invasions, that the necessary safety conditions were created for fishermen to settle on the beach. Nazaré began to be known and sought after as a bathing beach in the mid-19th century.

Its natural beauty and typical character have always attracted visitors. Throughout most of the 20th century, fishing, fish processing and selling were the main activities of the population.

The harshness and danger of life at sea led many fishermen to seek a better life elsewhere. The construction of the Fishing and Recreational Port in the early 1980s changed and improved the lives of the fishermen, ushering in a new phase in the town's daily life.

In the 1960s, tourism discovered the charm of this town and Nazaré began to be known internationally. Visited annually by thousands of domestic and foreign tourists, Nazaré is now a modern and lively town.
